Night At The Cinema

5 Oct

I’m a movie fanatic! Don’t get me wrong, I love all different film genres but there are just some underrated films that a girl just needs to watch once in her lifetime. Instead of watching “Knocked Up” for the millionth time, rent some of these films that are most likely available from your local library:

How To Marry A Millionaire

If you’ve seen the Sex and the City movie one too many times, check out this film starring the original Samantha Jones, Marilyn Monroe. This movie is most likely one of the many inspirations behind the “Sex” franchise. Monroe, along with Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable, star as Manhattan models who seek out wealthy men but discover a few surprises along the way.

Why you need to watch this: Marilyn Monroe has inspired every modern day starlet from Lindsay Lohan to Scarlett Johansson, so she’s always someone to take notes from.

The Women

Although I’m obsessed with Marilyn Monroe (see above), I have an undying appreciation for Joan Crawford. In my opinion, she is one of the best actresses to grace the silver screen. Crawford plays Crystal Allen, a shopgirl who is having an affair with a married man. When Crystal finally marries him, deception and bribery follow. Don’t worry, it’s a comedy, so you can relish in the gossipy plot.

Why you need to watch this: Crawford is the ultimate bitchy rich girl. She definitely paved the way for Blair Waldorf and Amanda Woodward (Melrose Place).

Now and Then

This was one of my favorite movies in 7th grade and it still remains close to my heart. I’ve seen it many times. Any girl both young and old can relate to the eventful summer of four adolescent girls. The young stars (including an young yet super-talented Christina Ricci) demonstrate brilliant deadpan humor and sarcasm.

Why you need to watch this: It’s the female “Stand By Me.”

Snow White

It’s a pity that Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella get all the attention. Snow White is the first full-length animated film from Walt Disney which means that leading lady was our very first Princess Diva. She was also the target of jealousy so extreme that she was even poisoned. Yikes! Even if you’ve seen this already, it’s worth revisiting every so often, especially if you are big on 50’s Disney kitsch.

Why you need to watch this: Because you deserve a real-life Prince Charming and let’s face it, this film features the real deal.

Auntie Mame

When an orphan goes to live with his eclectic Auntie Mame, things go awry faster than you can say sequins and furs. This is a great movie if you want to discover other fashion icons besides Kate Moss and Sienna Miller.

Why you need to watch this: You’ll be regarded as a true fashion insider.
