Must See Movie: The Bling Ring

20 May

Director Sofia Coppola’s new film, The Bling Ring, her first since 2010’s Somewhere, chronicles the real-life group of teens that robbed the L.A. homes of Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.

The teen’s blatant disregard for authority and their sheer arrogance is met with an almost sad desperation to be among the “A-Listers” of Hollywood. The obvious star of the movie is Emma Watson, who plays a aspiring reality t.v. wannabe, but I also have high hopes for Israel Broussard, an up and coming actor who’s confidence off-screen may be a foreshadowing of a promising career. The highly stylized film beautifully depicts a paparazzi ridden, modern-day California with cameo appearances by Paris Hilton and Kirsten Dunst. Also, any soundtrack with Azealia Banks is a winner in my book. The Bling Ring should not be dismissed as just another teen movie but rather a depiction of the dangers of Hollywood acceptance and the cliche spoiled youth culture.
