My 10 Favorite Looks From Spring’s New York Fashion Week

17 Sep

With over 100 designer collections, it was hard for me to narrow down my favorites. But here they are. Let me know what you think!

This dress from Oscar De La Renta. Do I need to say more? The color is just perfection and you will definitely make an entrance with the graceful high-low hem. Now all you need is a cocktail.

This Alice + Olivia look just proves you can wear denim with the most precious of things. Take this mint leather a-line skirt. This is ladylike meets L.A. casual.

Varsity looks certainly do not look like they are taking a seat on the bleachers any time soon, at least according to Marc by Marc Jacobs. I certainly wouldn't wear these two together but this jacket is an easy daytime essential.

I may have played with Jem dolls too much as a kid but I find something refreshingly girly about these shorts from Custo Barcelona. They can even be a clever replacement for a party dress. Just add a pretty camisole.

This look from Tory Burch reminds me of the book "Valley of the Dolls." Now all you need is sex kitten hair and you can easily switch out the heels for a pair of Tory's amazing flats.

Joie and practically every other fashion designer embraced the bare midriff trend for the season. I like the Joie look because it just gives a glimpse of skin without trying too hard.

Misha Nonoo designed one of the most mindful dress collections this season. With her impeccable attention to detail and her reasonable price points, this label is bound for success.

Ironically, I am showing a skirt here, which I love because it somehow grazes over imperfections (kind of like Vaseline over a camera lens).

I'm a sucker for a great short and Kate Spade showed a few. This metallic one will make your tan look glorious.

Walk Like a Harlequin

16 Jun

Everyone defines 80’s style as neon, big hair and leggings. I tend to look at an era in it’s entirety. Sometimes it happens by accident.

In my college days, I was working across the street from Bryant Park for a major contemporary brand. I was walking to work when I stopped to look through some jewelery at a random stand and found a “flapper” pin. It was actually more like a harlequin face. She had a purple turban and winged out eyeliner. The man wanted a $1 for it (we settled on the grand sum of .75 cents), and off I went.

That pin changed the whole look of a bag that I literally wore to shreads. It was a slouchy leather pebbled black satchel with gold hardware. The pin transformed it from an everyday satchel to a vintage gyspy bag.

I became more and more inspired by these types of pins and the overall aesthetic of the look in general. Apparently, this was a very big trend back in the early 80’s. I even had a sticker book with a harlequin on the cover. Stationary extraordinaire Lisa Frank created halequin stickers. I started strolling through Etsy. Guess what? More harlequins. Harlequins even became relevant in the 00’s. You should google Miu Miu Spring 2008.

Here are my favorite harlequin things:

Book Worm: “I Want To Be Her! How Friends and Strangers Helped Shape My Style”

5 Sep

Imagine being in high school and having the coolest girl with the most effortless style sit down and tell you what greatly influences her (and without attitude). This is sort of like talking with Andrea Linett, the co-founder of Lucky magazine and now creative director of Michael Kors. I’ve always admired her candid air in her column Fashion Babble, which concluded every issue of Lucky magazine for over 10 years. Her style, which is greatly inspired by Bob Dylan, is consistent yet always interesting, as you can see on her website I Want To Be Her.

With 50 illustrations of style influences by Anne Johnston Albert of Fashion Babble fame, this book is part memoir, part style guide. It makes it all the more endearing, considering that lots of influence comes from family and friends closest to the author. It goes to show that someone besides an overexposed pop star, can also rock someone’s fashionable world.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

1 Jul

My obsession with all things rainbow was triggered today when I walked into Longchamp:

This is coming with me on a birthday vacation trip! I was also prompted to buy these today. I’m proclaiming vintage barrettes as the new accessory du jour!

I’ve also been dreaming about these shoes for months.

If I Lived in Sweet Valley: Book #1

29 Jun

Welcome to Sweet Valley, California, a place full of palm trees, sunshine, milkshakes and pastels! Since these elements inspire what I share with the world, it’s only natural to imagine what these girls would be wearing in each book.

The first book of the Sweet Valley High series, titled Double Love, centers around blonde and gorgeous twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield. They are like night and day. Liz is down-to-earth, well-liked and a writer for The Oracle, SVH’s campus newspaper. Jessica is co-captain of the cheerleading squad, immerses herself in fashion magazines and is the biggest flirt in school. In this particular story, Jessica finds out that handsome Todd Wilkins likes Elizabeth. Jessica is upset and does whatever it takes to win his attention. The ego on this girl is enormous! One night she is approached by high school dropout Rick Andover. She agrees to go to a bar with him and as soon as she senses he might be taking things a little far with her, she demands she gets taken home. He refuses and a fight breaks out at the bar. Everyone at school finds out but actually thinks it was Liz who was brought home by the cops instead. Todd is disappointed and Jess stays quiet while everyone talks behind her sister’s back. Classyyy…..

Todd then invites Jessica to the school dance and Liz is devastated. But Todd still likes Liz and discovers that she wasn’t the girl at the bar the other night. He punches Rick in the face at the high school haunt, The Dairi Burger, and as Jessica runs up to kiss him, Liz pushes her out of the way and kisses him instead.
