3 Carry-On Items That You Should Pack For Your Next Flight

23 Jul

Besides the essentials (passport, ipod, phone…)  there are certain extras that will make your take-off much more exciting:

Movie Star Shades

Tom Ford Nastasya Sunglasses, $380, Solticesunglasses.com

Whether you go for a 60’s round look or a sleek cat eye such as these glasses from Tom Ford, all eyes will definitely be on you when you wear dramatic shades.

Luxe Moisturizer

La Mer Moisturizing Creme, $155 for 1 oz; Lamer.com

La Mer Moisturizing Creme, $155 for 1 oz; Lamer.com

Even the oiliest faces can get super dry on a flight. Within carry-on limits, it is still quite easy to find a moisturizer that will work well while flying high. La Mer is the epitome of luxury but Kiehls, Neutrogena and Lancome make fantastic creams that will work way beyond touchdown.

Sleep Mask

"Sleeping Beauty" Sleep Mask, $25, Mary Green

“Sleeping Beauty” Sleep Mask, $25, Mary Green

A sleeping mask is an often overlooked necessity for flights. Along with ear plugs, you will blissfully miss out on all of the entertainment a flight typically has to offer such as screaming kids and noisy chatter. Plus it will send a subtle hint to the person next to you that you are not exactly in the mood for conversation.

Clean Slate

22 Apr

Lately my classic combination skin and I have not been on the best of terms. It doesn’t work well with stress and it still thinks it is winter (dryness anyone?). Skincare is simple science for the very few who have true oily or dry skin. Everything is labeled appropriately for these lucky few. Even oil-free is code for “dry skin stay away,  all of the oily come on board.”

I was never this lucky. My skincare routine is a reality of trial and error; a smorgasbord of products that address all of my ailments. I use a cream scrub every morning, followed by a moisturizer that is heavy enough to make a difference but light enough where I don’t look greasy (to be honest, I have not found this perfect moisturizer yet). Every so often, usually before an event, I’ll use my favorite mask on the planet, Boscia Luminizing Black Mask and at night, I cleanse with a gel cleanser, Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Cleanser. I avoid the night creams because they feel too heavy.

The million dollar question: Is it really all necessary?

I was excited to hear about Estee Lauder’s new product launch, Perfectly Clean. It seems well-organized, suitable yet effective and…clean.

There are two cleansers in this group. The first is the  foam cleanser that moonlights as a purifying mask.  The second is a cream cleanser that doubles as a hydrating mask. That is a 4-in-2 for me and (lucky, lucky) 2-in-1 for the others. The other products include a gelee that’s a cleanser/exfoliate, another cleanser that is a toner/makeup- remover hybrid for those late nights, and a simple refining toner.

No crazy mix and matching here. This is a clean slate.

How To Slim Your Face By Contouring

16 Oct

Contouring tends to get a bad reputation. It has an “80’s not in a good way” stigma. Think women wearing way too much cakey foundation and heavy purple eyeshadow.

But those 80’s girls were on to something. Contouring can make a face look thinner and more defined in an instant. It’s also really easy if you have the right tools.

What You’ll Need:

– A medium to full coverage foundation (the formulation isn’t really what matters here. The coverage counts because it’s hard to get definition with just tinted moisturizer).

Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation, $42, Lauramercier.com

– A matte bronzer 1-3 shades darker than your skin tone.

Rimmel Natural Bronzer, $5, Target stores.

– A slanted bronzer brush.

Sephora Pro Angled Blush Brush #49, $32, Sephora.com

– Blush (optional).

Cover Girl Cheekers Blush, $5, Drugstores

Step One: Apply your foundation with a foundation brush. I love Urban Decay’s Optical Blurring Brush. I like to start with a dime size of foundation and build it up, since it’s much easier to add than to take off. Use concealer under eyes and on blemishes as needed for a flawless finish.

Step Two: Take the bronzer brush and dip it lightly into your bronzer. Some brands that make great bronzers are M.A.C. and Rimmel. Make a “fish” face and where your face is sunken in, apply with an up and down motion. (The sunken in part will be parallel to your ears and mouth). Don’t travel to close to hairline or mouth. This will look funny.

Step 3: Lightly dust bronzer onto temples, sides of nose and bottom of chin. Make sure you blend well.

Step 4: If you want a dramatic Brooke Shields style circa Calvin Klein look, which focuses strictly on the cheekbones, I would use a darker bronzer and skip blush. If you want a brighter look,  go lighter on bronzer, then smile and apply a pink blush to the apples of your cheeks.

Keep in mind that this is a general guideline and tends to work for a majority of the girls I’ve spoken to but just to be extra helpful, I’ve included the contouring guideline below for specific face shapes.
