Top 3 Lipsticks Every R.G. Needs in Her Arsenal

2 Aug

I’ll admit, I really do not wear lipstick often. Maybe it’s because I speak a lot and I have some irrational fear that it will get on my teeth. But even though it might not be a constant, I have a lipstick for every occasion and style. If you are still building your cosmetic wardrobe or simply just love make-up, take a look at my three have-to-have-them lipsticks:

The Perfect Red

This is the hardest lipstick to find. “This red has too much blue” and “this one has orange undertones” are excerpts of conversation that are all too familiar to any daunted shopper on the hunt for her red. Here’s the thing, your best friend’s red is not going to be your red. Also, she might swear by Lancome but Cover Girl might suit you just fine. Either way, try a few at a Sephora or a department store and then look at yourself in natural daylight. By the way, Chanel “Gabrielle”is my red and rumor has it that it’s many others as well.

A Semi-Frosty Pink

I’m not talking old lady frosty pink but something pretty for when you look tan or girly. The trick is to go with something without silver sparkle in it. That’s a deal breaker. Warmer tones are always more flattering and goof-proof. I think I have six tubes of Politely Pink from M.A.C. lying in different handbags.

A Go With Everything Nude

Nude lipsticks are like a good push-up bra; they make you look more…ahem…pronounced, all while playing a supportive role. You should think of nudes this way.  They compliment a smokey eye just perfectly but can also be mixed with any other lipstick or gloss. NARS Belle De Jour has enough color so you don’t look washed out.

The 2011 RGRS Gift Guide: Part 1

3 Dec

It’s that time of the year again and what better way to kick off the season than to have an easy gift guide that will have everyone saying, “Wow, she/he really surprised me with that (fill in fun gift here)?!

This is not just any old guide though. I’ve actually been told that I give the best gifts. I think part of it has to do with that fact that I love shopping vicariously through other people but may I add that being a great listener as well as knowing where to source gifts that have a touch of  personality really helps too!

These guides are not by “Brother”, “Girlfriend”, “Mom”, etc. I did do them by personality but not just any run-of-the-mill type. Chances are if you read this site often, you actually know at least one of these types very well. Tonight features our first personality type, “The Label Whore.”

Yup, no explanation necessary, although I will proceed. She/he only wears the latest and greatest. Yes, even the nail polish is Chanel. Despite what people may think, this is actually a tough type to buy for. Just when you think you have them down, they are all sick of Balenciaga and onto Proenza……

Beauty Advisor Featuring Erika Hardison

30 Aug

I’m fortunate enough to constantly be around fascinating and creative people. So imagine my excitement that my first exclusive RGRS interview is with make-up artist Erika Hardison.

Erika is no stranger to shock value. I met her about 4 years ago when she was doing make-up on all walks of life. Her signature was bright shadows and party looks but she also mastered the natural look on clients who prefered that. We both had an obsession with false eyelashes and major mascaras such as Dior Show. Her larger than life personality was refreshing, especially in a world that embraced Juicy sweatsuits and when lipgloss was considered a full face of make-up.

Fast forward to 2010. Erika has worked with The Source, America’s Next Top Model contestants and D.A.M. Magazine among others. Her newest venture is her website Fabulize Magazine, an e-zine that features Erika’s beauty advice, inspirations and tip-offs on happenings going on in the cosmetics world. I spoke to Erika about her must have items, how to apply bright shadow without looking like a clown and the ultimate RGRS products. Also, check out the beautiful pictures of Erika’s work!

You’re the ultimate RGRS when it comes to your makeup. What are
your five personal favorite “can’t live without products?”

Being that I’m always on the go, I need beauty products that can
make me look like I’m ready for the runway but which I can also apply on the subway. I like to use the Nars Multiple sticks (my favorite is Copacabana), Lancome lipgloss, MAC eyeliner in Engraved, Nars Duo blush/bronzer in Lovejoy/Albatross and Smashbox mascara.

The beauty market seems to be oversaturated these days. Are there any products you discovered recently that could change someone’s life (or less dramatically, their routine)?

Moisturizer and eyecreams. I cringe when I see women wear full-face makeup and their skin looks dehydrated.

Who are your beauty icons?

So many people to name! Diana Ross, Erykah Badu, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Eva Mendes and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

What five products should no girl be without?

Moisturizer, SPF, mascara, highlighters and lipgloss.

What’s the best beauty tip you ever learned?

I’ve learned that no matter how good your makeup is, if your eyebrows aren’t groomed, you’ve wasted your time.

You play with a lot of color which is amazing but how does a non-makeup artist do that without looking like a clown?

Use cream shadows like Make Up For Ever’s cream palletes. You can mix colors and use your fingers to to achieve different looks both strong and soft.

Where’s your favorite place to shop for products? Any hidden gems?

I’m a huge Make Up For Ever freak. Everything I’ve ever needed and wanted is there. I also like Lime Crime (a cosmetics line). I am going to create my own cosmetics line and those will also be my hidden gems. FABULIZE Magazine is also a hidden gem for women who want to embrace trendy looks and try new beauty tricks.

What products can you get away with buying cheap and which products are worth splurging on?

Always splurge on foundation and skincare. Lipsticks, glosses and nail polish can be good quality cheap or expensive.

Any makeup artists that inspire you?

Pat McGrath, David Klasfeld, Gucci Westman, Sam Fine, Daniel K, Dany Sanz and Kevin Aucoin.

Based on what you know about Rich Girls and Rollerskates, what one product sums up the RGRS girl and why?

RGRS’ are retro so I can definitely see lots of lashes and black eyeliner. RGRS girls are rockstars!

You can visit Erika’s site at http://fabulizemagazine.wordpress.com and follow her on Twitter at Fabulizemag/twitter.

Beautiful Life

10 Feb

I’m obsessed with make-up but I’m not as compulsive with it as I used to be. Meaning, I do not go to CVS with my paycheck and buy random mascaras and nail polishes like I did when I was in high school. As I grew up, I started to stick to products that never let me down. Most importantly, I started diligently taking care of my skin. I didn’t realize how much I abused it (sleeping in make-up, exfoliating a lot with St. Ives, wearing crap foundation…). It’s cool to experiment with eyeshadow and lipsticks but I think the core items should be nurturing and good for you.

Today, as I was cleaning my room (what else do you do in a middle of a blizzard?), I’m inspired to write about my favorite products. Here they are and please let me know what yours are. Perhaps it will inspire me even further to write about those!

Dove Cool Moisture Foaming Facial Cleanser, $4, Amazon.com

This cleanser was phased out of drugstores but I found it on Amazon and it’s so much cheaper.  It’s kept my skin really clear and it’s never drying or greasy.

Dr. Perricone Advanced Eye Area Therapy, $95, Perriconemd.com

When I was first introduced to this product about 4 years ago, it really scared me. I thought because it was “advanced” that it would be too strong for my young skin and burn it. This is so gentle and packed with anti-oxidants and vitamin c.

Clean & Clear Morning Glow Moisturizer, $6.50, Drugstore.com

This is really light, so it’s ideal to put under make-up. It also has light-reflecting particles to give a pretty glow and it’s oil-free.

Lisa Hoffman Vitamin A and C Serum, $95, Dermstore.com

I recently started using this. It’s not for oily types but for someone like me who wants a little something extra in this drying weather.

Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment, $2.19, Drugstore.com

This may not have the most exciting package but it’s the best balm out there when your lips are cracked and the smelly stuff won’t do.

NYC Browser Brush-on Brow Powder with Grooming Wax and Tweezers, $4, Target stores

This is my cheap thrill! I nixed the tweezers (although they are really not that bad) but I adore the powder. It’s not the least bit red like most brow powders.

L'oreal Extra Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner, $8, Target stores

This has a really smooth application and can be used inside the water line and on your lids. Now all L’oreal needs to do is come out with a waterproof version.

Fresh Supernova Mascara, $25, Neimanmarcus.com

Anyone who knows me personally can contest that I’ve tried basically every mascara on the market. This is the best one because it really gives the most voluminous look and you don’t kill your lashes every time you use it.

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, $19, Sephora.com

I’ve been using this forever. Nothing can replace it. You really don’t get the hype until you try it.

Smith's Rosebud Salve, $6, Sephora.com

It’s your lips but better. I haven’t met a person that it doesn’t look good on.

MAC Lipstick in Politely Pink, $18.50, MACcosmetics.com

Most “baby” pink lipsticks are too silver/white/shimmery but this is perfect. I have tubes of it all over my room.

Benefit Benetint Lip Balm, $20, Benefitcosmetics.com

If you are experimenting with red lips but are scared to go all the way, you should try this first. You can even apply it without a mirror.

Tarte Bronzer, $28, Tartecosmetics.com

A bronzer that is great for your skin and looks good. No wonder why it’s always sold out.

Nars Blush in Orgasm, $26, Sephora.com

A no-brainer. It never looks fake and you only need a little.
