5 Pieces That Will Probably Make You a Street Style Star

25 Jul

Nothing is worse than people who look so cookie cutter. There are definitely pieces out there that will express your style without even saying a word.

NOTE: This is not for somebody who only wants to wear twinsets and pearls. These pieces are funky and will make a statement.

Lunchboxes

I’ve always loved lunchboxes. I had a Ghostbusters one in elementary school and a Kerropi one in junior high for storing school supplies. They are so unpredictable but yet so practical and durable. Plus, anyone can find one that tells everyone what their favorite T.V. show, musician or cartoon they enjoyed as a child. Even former Paris Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld used a Mickey Mouse one in her latest editorial for V magazine, proof that something that seems so childish can have their very own high-fashion moment as well.

Charms

My own charms; a unicorn and an I ❤ Los Angeles necklace.

Charms are extremely accessible, especially if you are on a tight budget. They could cost as little as a nickel or into the millions if you get yours from Harry Winston! They could even be heirlooms. My mother has an impressive charm collection with all of the cliches, “#1 Mom” and birthstone charms included. They can also be put onto bracelets, necklaces or can dangle off of a cool bag…perhaps on heirloom as well?

Unique Iphone Case(s)

Iphones are the most coveted accessories of our generation. They practically live our lives for us. Why not dress them accordingly? Some people change their cases as often as their underwear and that’s cool but you can also make your case a signature. You can be the label whore and get a designer case. Or be the girly girl and gets yours completely jeweled.

Signature Hat or Scarf

It’s important to think about what you want your overall style to say. The rock stars seem to go for fedoras and skull scarves. The trendsetters love leopard and berets. It takes some experimenting. It might even be a distinct color that you love. A great example of a consistent wearer of scarves is Nicole Richie. She is either wearing her leopard scarf or her McQueen skull scarf. She also wears them in a plethora of ways which is quite inspirational.

In cold climates, people only see your coat, so you better make it good. Pick one that’s complimentary to your shape and remember, the ability to layer is key, so be wise when it comes to size.

3 Carry-On Items That You Should Pack For Your Next Flight

23 Jul

Besides the essentials (passport, ipod, phone…)  there are certain extras that will make your take-off much more exciting:

Movie Star Shades

Tom Ford Nastasya Sunglasses, $380, Solticesunglasses.com

Whether you go for a 60’s round look or a sleek cat eye such as these glasses from Tom Ford, all eyes will definitely be on you when you wear dramatic shades.

Luxe Moisturizer

La Mer Moisturizing Creme, $155 for 1 oz; Lamer.com

La Mer Moisturizing Creme, $155 for 1 oz; Lamer.com

Even the oiliest faces can get super dry on a flight. Within carry-on limits, it is still quite easy to find a moisturizer that will work well while flying high. La Mer is the epitome of luxury but Kiehls, Neutrogena and Lancome make fantastic creams that will work way beyond touchdown.

Sleep Mask

"Sleeping Beauty" Sleep Mask, $25, Mary Green

“Sleeping Beauty” Sleep Mask, $25, Mary Green

A sleeping mask is an often overlooked necessity for flights. Along with ear plugs, you will blissfully miss out on all of the entertainment a flight typically has to offer such as screaming kids and noisy chatter. Plus it will send a subtle hint to the person next to you that you are not exactly in the mood for conversation.

I Don’t Think You’re Ready For This Jelly

These new shoes from Stuart Weitzman brought me back to the days of camp and jelly shoes….1995 to be exact.

Can’t you just picture wearing these on the shores of Bermuda? I can. Jelly shoes are truly the most waterproof shoes on the planet, making them perfect for impromptu strolls on Caribbean islands or the local beach. The crystals add even more 90’s flavor. I’ll take both colors please!

Walk Like a Harlequin

16 Jun

Everyone defines 80’s style as neon, big hair and leggings. I tend to look at an era in it’s entirety. Sometimes it happens by accident.

In my college days, I was working across the street from Bryant Park for a major contemporary brand. I was walking to work when I stopped to look through some jewelery at a random stand and found a “flapper” pin. It was actually more like a harlequin face. She had a purple turban and winged out eyeliner. The man wanted a $1 for it (we settled on the grand sum of .75 cents), and off I went.

That pin changed the whole look of a bag that I literally wore to shreads. It was a slouchy leather pebbled black satchel with gold hardware. The pin transformed it from an everyday satchel to a vintage gyspy bag.

I became more and more inspired by these types of pins and the overall aesthetic of the look in general. Apparently, this was a very big trend back in the early 80’s. I even had a sticker book with a harlequin on the cover. Stationary extraordinaire Lisa Frank created halequin stickers. I started strolling through Etsy. Guess what? More harlequins. Harlequins even became relevant in the 00’s. You should google Miu Miu Spring 2008.

Here are my favorite harlequin things:

My Last Resort

11 Jun

When I’m feeling more NYC 90’s sleek, Helmut Lang is one of my go-to labels. Although it may be way too early to start thinking of Resort, this jacket stopped in me in my tracks:

Confession: I really want the whole outfit.

Thanks Helmut Lang! I will now be up thinking about it until it hits stores in December/January.
