Miami Vice

15 Aug

I just came back from being in South Beach for the first time and I must say that it exceeded my expectations. Miami is not just made up of crazy spring breaker types. It’s a beach city that has some of the most elegant and glamorous restaurants/hotels/shops that I’ve ever seen. Don’t believe me? Here are three of my picks amongst Miami’s finest:

The Ritz-Carlton

1 Lincoln Road

Dinner poolside at the Ritz-Carlton, South Beach.

Dinner poolside at the Ritz-Carlton, South Beach.

It might cost a kidney to stay here but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the Ritz.  The DiLido Beach Club is an amazing restaurant to celebrate a special occasion or if you just want an amazing meal for almost the same amount you would pay at any other trendy Miami Beach spot.  The service here cannot be matched. The staff is always attentive but never overbearing.  They even served me dessert on the house for my birthday. And their cocktails are absolutely amazing. If you love Daquiris or Pina Coladas, you must try “The Vice.” A must try if you are trying to get away from the touristy Lincoln crowd. You can even dive in the pool and they won’t even say anything 😉

Yuca

501 Lincoln Road

One of the things I was looking forward to do on my trip to Miami was to try have some authentic Cuban food. I was very lucky to visit during “Miami Spice” (Miami’s version of restaurant week) and Yuca had a exceptional dinner menu. If you love meat, you cannot pass this place up. Their pork is out of this world, the empanadas are a splendid starter and the margaritas are very strong, just the way they should be. This is a great place to have dinner right before heading upstairs, where on most Saturdays they have a D.J. or a band.

The Webster

1220 Collins Avenue

The Webster

If you love Alaia, Chanel and Balenciaga, this boutique housed in a 20,000 square foot Art Deco building is a label whore’s dream. Quirky Charlotte Olympia clutches live amongst Maison Michel headpieces and Chanel jackets. Although everything is pretty much out of my price range, (with the exception of the signature Webster candles??), I had so much fun looking at everything. Also, the salespeople are very welcoming. To make things even more insanely stylish, they have a happy hour on their rooftop from 7-11PM.

3 Carry-On Items That You Should Pack For Your Next Flight

23 Jul

Besides the essentials (passport, ipod, phone…)  there are certain extras that will make your take-off much more exciting:

Movie Star Shades

Tom Ford Nastasya Sunglasses, $380, Solticesunglasses.com

Whether you go for a 60’s round look or a sleek cat eye such as these glasses from Tom Ford, all eyes will definitely be on you when you wear dramatic shades.

Luxe Moisturizer

La Mer Moisturizing Creme, $155 for 1 oz; Lamer.com

La Mer Moisturizing Creme, $155 for 1 oz; Lamer.com

Even the oiliest faces can get super dry on a flight. Within carry-on limits, it is still quite easy to find a moisturizer that will work well while flying high. La Mer is the epitome of luxury but Kiehls, Neutrogena and Lancome make fantastic creams that will work way beyond touchdown.

Sleep Mask

"Sleeping Beauty" Sleep Mask, $25, Mary Green

“Sleeping Beauty” Sleep Mask, $25, Mary Green

A sleeping mask is an often overlooked necessity for flights. Along with ear plugs, you will blissfully miss out on all of the entertainment a flight typically has to offer such as screaming kids and noisy chatter. Plus it will send a subtle hint to the person next to you that you are not exactly in the mood for conversation.

Beach Bunny: Siesta Key Beach, Florida

19 Jul

siesta key beach

If you are looking for a beach on the East Coast that is clean and actually has clear water, you might want to consider heading down to Siesta Key Beach.

This gorgeous beach is a popular destination for weddings as well as Americans who want a quick weekend getaway. The sand is also pure white and according to a friend “feels like talcum powder.” I wouldn’t advise going during a holiday week and when you do visit, I recommend The Ringling Beach House.

I Don’t Think You’re Ready For This Jelly

“Jealous” shoes, Stuart Weitzman, $195.

These new shoes from Stuart Weitzman brought me back to the days of camp and jelly shoes….1995 to be exact.

Can’t you just picture wearing these on the shores of Bermuda? I can. Jelly shoes are truly the most waterproof shoes on the planet, making them perfect for impromptu strolls on Caribbean islands or the local beach. The crystals add even more 90’s flavor. I’ll take both colors please!

London Calling: A First-Timer’s Cheat Sheet on Where to Stay in the Middle of it All

27 Jun

When visiting Europe, it is very common to city-hop your way through due to accessibility and affordable train fares. But chances are that the hotels are not as cheap. I’ve researched some accommodations that are right near Big Ben, Harrods and Westminster Bridge:

Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London

park plaza westminster bridge london

Cost: About $350 per night

The Perks: A fantastic indoor pool, yummy sushi bar, one block from the tube, Big Ben is a stones throw away, posh Mandara Spa.

The Belgrave

belgrave

Cost: An affordable $160 a night

The Perks: Pretty inexpensive considering that all the tourist attractions are within walking distance, modern decor, great breakfast, detailed service.

Another alternative is to rent a room or an apartment for your stay. I actually found one 10 minutes from the Westminster bridge and the reviews were excellent.

kitchen

Cost: A good apartment can cost anywhere from $100 a night-$500 a night. Please note that their is usually a minimum amount of nights that you must stay.

The Perks: Privacy, getting the “real” experience”, costs much less than staying at a hotel, usually a local owner who can fill you in on fun things to do.
