Walk Like a Harlequin

16 Jun

Everyone defines 80’s style as neon, big hair and leggings. I tend to look at an era in it’s entirety. Sometimes it happens by accident.

In my college days, I was working across the street from Bryant Park for a major contemporary brand. I was walking to work when I stopped to look through some jewelery at a random stand and found a “flapper” pin. It was actually more like a harlequin face. She had a purple turban and winged out eyeliner. The man wanted a $1 for it (we settled on the grand sum of .75 cents), and off I went.

That pin changed the whole look of a bag that I literally wore to shreads. It was a slouchy leather pebbled black satchel with gold hardware. The pin transformed it from an everyday satchel to a vintage gyspy bag.

I became more and more inspired by these types of pins and the overall aesthetic of the look in general. Apparently, this was a very big trend back in the early 80’s. I even had a sticker book with a harlequin on the cover. Stationary extraordinaire Lisa Frank created halequin stickers. I started strolling through Etsy. Guess what? More harlequins. Harlequins even became relevant in the 00’s. You should google Miu Miu Spring 2008.

Here are my favorite harlequin things:

RGRS Rolodex: The Most Authentic (Cheap) Thrift Shop in The East Village

No Relation Vintage

204 1st Avenue

NYC 10009

It’s quite obvious that I’m on an East Village kick lately. Although the neighborhood used to pride itself on individual and personal style, these days it seems the vintage stores charge more than just a song for a t-shirt. If you are looking for a fun thrift store to hunt for cool and inexpensive pieces that are a step up from the Salvation Army, I highly recommend No Relation Vintage. The average price for a top is $10 and they have a huge wall of boots and old-school sneakers. I love going in here with no agenda. It’s relaxing just to comb the racks and maybe find a rare 60’s print dress, a chic pair of Ferragamo flats or a Biggie vintage tee.

Vintage Find of the Week: Strawberry Shortcake Lunchbox

5 Oct

Carrying around a lunchbox may seem infantile but I’d much rather say it’s a nod to my memories of 90’s ravers. Lunchboxes (or “lunch tins”, the terminology that vintage enthusiasts prefer) are also a great alternative to the clutch. While most are carrying a Celine, why not make an entrance with a tin of your choice? You can proudly display your favorite movie, musician, cartoon, travel destination or style subculture without saying a word.

Today I chose Strawberry Shortcake but there are zillions of lunchboxes to choose from on Ebay and Etsy. Plus, you can easily fit an Iphone, makeup-bag, wallet and keys with ease.

RGRS Rolodex: The Best Place To Go For Vintage Boots

Edith Machinist

Every girl, at least once in her life, is on the tough quest of finding the perfect pair of boots. The fall season tends to spark this obsession. Every girl picks her poison distinctively. Some prefer a slick black sexy stiletto boot. Others crave a beat up motorcycle boot, and you’ll even get a few every so often who love a red boot (can you say Jennifer Foster circa high school)?

There’s good and bad news. The bad: A great pair of boots can be very tricky to find. The good: You’ll probably find the style you want at Edith Machinist. Lucky for you that I know a thing or two about finding a specific place for a specific reason.

Edith Machinist (her real name!) was one of the first NYC boutique owners to stock vintage with a modern cool aesthetic. She carries some great clothing and handbags (mostly from the 70’s and 80’s) but her draw is definitely footwear. Although prices spike easily, it’s still possible to leave the store with something around $30. This is a must-stop, especially for the vintage loving RGRS.

P.S. If you can’t travel to NYC, she also has a website!
