NYC Soundtrack: Beastie Boy’s Licenced to Ill

24 Apr

Licensed_to_ill

Licensed to Ill is a NYC classic for quite a few reasons. For one, it was The Beastie Boy’s debut album but it is also one of Columbia Records fastest selling albums to date. It has some iconic songs such as, “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)!”, “Brass Monkey” and “Girls.” If you grew up in the 90’s like I did, you definitely know these songs. This is a New York band, period.  They were a regular fixture on the 80’s East Village circuit and performed at the legendary CBGB and Max’s Kansas City.

The album also epitomizes the crossover of 80’s hip-hop and pop culture. The group holds it’s own against other influential artists of that time such as LL Cool J but can still open up for Madonna’s Like a Virgin tour, which in itself is quite incredible. It is also the only album by a white hip-hop act to receive 5 mics from Source magazine, which Jay-z also received for his Blueprint release.

All you have to do is close your eyes and pick out two things in different solid colors from your closet and voila…a whole new look! Also, when in doubt, looking at a color wheel and going for colors across from each other also works.

NYC Soundtrack: Puff Daddy’s No Way Out Album

Puff-Daddy-&-The-Family-No-Way-Out

When I started high school in 1997, my sister received this album as a birthday gift by accident from my mother. My mother didn’t realize that “Mo Money Mo Problems” was actually on The Notorious B.IG.’s album Life After Death, which was released earlier that same year. Therefore, this hit machine was kindly discarded onto the back of Gina’s C.D. holder, where The Rugrats Soundtrack and Jock Jams took precedence.

I gladly took advantage of this scenario. Being a newly minted freshman who sat by the radio listening to FunkMaster Flex every single night, I played this ad nauseum and enjoyed every single song…and still do. This is one of the albums that epitomizes urban New York to me. It’s the first of it’s kind to make the true crossover from hip-hop to pop seamlessly. “I’ll Be Missing You” is a classic example of this and history is proof; it stayed #1 on the Billboard charts for 11 consecutive weeks. “Been Around the World” is most likely my personal favorite because of the Bowie sampling but “Senorita” is also a contender because of it’s melodic R&B touch.

A true classic, now that it’s 15 years old (!), perhaps my mom was on to something.

Music Video Flashback: (Always Be My) Sunshine, Jay-z featuring Foxy Brown and Babyface

9 Oct

As I was getting ready in the morning on my first day of 9th grade, I was watching MTV when this video came on. It was Jay-z and Foxy Brown. I haven’t seen them in a video together since “Ain’t No N***a”, a single that was released from his prior album, Reasonable Doubt.

This video is definitely dated. Dancers are dressed in bright colored sweatsuits, dancing in a room resembling a life size Rubix cube of even brighter lights.I loved Jay-z and always thought Foxy was fun, especially in this video where the duo seem to be spinning endlessly while ferris wheels in shades of Skittles linger in the background.

Rumor has it that Jay-z didn’t care for this video. He thought it was too colorful. But there is no denying that this song made Jay-z more accepted amongst the pop crowd, giving him that appeal which made him globally successful.

My guess is that he didn’t mind that at all….
